Update: Final positions determined, Classic Empire out with abscess.

12 horses are scheduled to run this Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. This race has plenty of great betting opportunities despite the absence of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners. Remember, every race presents an opportunity to win. Play the ponies right and ignore the hype.

Win – Looking at Lee

A solid 2nd at the Derby and 4th at the Preakness means you should also be “Looking at Lee”. 🙂 Now he’s well primed to win the Belmont, having raced against top competition this season. Fun fact: He’s finished top 3 in every Graded Stakes race since September 17, 2016, except for a 4th place stumble at the Preakness. With Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing looking to other races, this is Lee’s chance to prevail.

Place – Epicharis

Epicharis hasn’t won a Graded Stakes event this year. But that doesn’t make him a risky bet this Saturday. He finished second at the Grade 2 UAE Derby on March 25, 2017 to Thunder Snow. Before that he won the February 19, 2017 Hyacinth Stakes in Tokyo. Many think he’d be lucky to hit the board. I’m more optimistic on this horse and have already witnessed him defeat better USA thoroughbreds.

Show – Senior Investment

This 3 year old colt has more races to his credit than both Looking at Lee and Epicharis. However he’s more inconsistent than his competitors. He either places top 7 or wins. On January 27 he was 7th at a Fair Grounds race. 3 weeks later on February 18 he won at Oaklawn Park. That cued him up to finish 6th at the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. True to form, he came back April 15 to win the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland. Then he reverted to the mean to finish 3rd at the Preakness. So let’s call him a fabulous candidate for a Trifecta or Superfecta Wheel, but too flaky for a win, place or show.

Alternate – Classic Empire – Out With Abscess

Update: Classic Empire is out, I recommend Irish War Cry as alternate.

Classic Empire has disappointed me, being a heavy favorite for both the Kentucky Derby (4th) and Preakness (2nd). His past performances foreshadowed immense potential, including victories at the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, Breeder’s Cup Futurity, and Arkansas Derby. He was third at the Holy Bull Stakes on February 4, 2017, behind Irish War Cry and Gunnevera. I honestly don’t know what to expect with Classic this Saturday, so he’s relegated to Alternate. I would add him to any Exacta, Trifecta or Superfecta Box or Wheel bet. But a Win, Place or Show pick seems too risky to me.
