The following video clip explains how to place this bet. Watch the entire video for other horse bets.

Sample procedure for how to make a Quinella Bet from a horse racebook
Quinella Sample Bet

  1. Select the “Quinella Bet” from your racebook’s wagering menu.
  2. Note the horses in the race, listed on the left. The next “ML” column lists the odds.
  3. Select two horse to finish in the first two positions. Final order does not matter. In this diagram, our two horses have 5/2 and 8/5 odds, respectively.
  4. ***Notes: Your 2 horses must finish in the first two positions. Order does not matter. Advanced bettors could place a Quinella wheel bet by choosing more than two horses. For example, horses Jones, Charlie, Larry and Tom. Please see our Quinella Betting page to learn more.

Example: $2 Quinella Bet

The minimum Quinella Bet costs $2. If you’re betting a quinella for the first time, bet the lowest amount possible.

Example Bet:

$2 Quinella Bet on Horses 6 & 3. That means you are betting $2 that horses 6 and 3 will finish in the first and second position. Order does not matter.

Variant #1: Quinella Box Betting

A Quinella Box bet is picking the top two horses from any number of horses. Finishing order does not matter. The minimum Quinella Box is 3 horses.

Quinella Box bets cost $2 per combination. Some tracks offer $1 per combination.

Quinella Box Cost Calculation: ( (Number of horses x (Number of horses – 1) ) / 2 ) x Cost per Combination

A 3 horse Quinella Box means there are 3 possible finishing combinations. Your bet will cost $6, $2 per combination.
3 horse cost = ( (3 horses x (3 horses -1)) / 2) x $2 = $6
4 horse cost = ( (4 horses x (4 horses -1)) / 2) x $2 = $12
5 horse cost = ( (5 horses x (5 horses -1)) / 2) x $2 = $20

Example: $2 Quinella Box Bet

  3. Select 3 horses to finish first and second. Remember, final order does not matter. In this diagram, the first horse has 5/2 odds. The second horse has 8/5 odds. The third horse has 2/1 odds.
  4. You must click the “Box” button. This indicates the bet is Quinella Box and not a straight Quinella.
  5. ***Notes: 2 of your 3 horses must finish in the first and second positions.
For example you bet horses Chris, Art and Hank. Suppose Chris and Art finish first and second, respectively. The bet would win. If Art and Hank finished first and second, the bet would also win. But if horse Neal ends up first or second, the bet would lose. You did not choose Neal in your box.

Variant #2: Quinella Wheel Betting

The Quinella Wheel bet is picking sets of horses to finish in the first two positions. This bet improves your chances of winning because 1 or more horses can be chosen to finish in each position.

Difference between Quinella Wheel and Quinella Box Bets?
Quinella Wheel betting is cheaper than Quinella Box betting. Bettors can select one horse to win in their first key and various others for their second key. They buy less combinations compared to a Quinella Box.

The Quinella “Key” Concept

Keying means selecting a set of horses to finish in a certain position. Quinellas are for first or second position. That means 2 keys must be made for each Quinella Wheel.

Start with the first key. Select 1 or more horses. For example, suppose horses 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 are racing. We will Wheel Horse 4-All. This means Horse 4 with all other horses.

Example 1st Key: Horse 4

That means Horse 4 must finish first or second. You can only win if horse 4 finishes first or second.

Example 2nd Key is: Horses 1, 2, 3, 5, 6

That means horses 1, 2, 3, 5 or 6 must finish first or second. You can only win if horses 1, 2, 3, 5, or 6 finishes first or second.

Quinella Wheel Bets Cost $2 Per Combination

Consider the following examples. We’ve put horses into the first and second keys. Quinella Wheel cost is number of combinations times $2.

Quinella Wheel Cost Calculation: ( (Number of first key horses) x (Number of second key horses) – (Number of horses in both keys x 2) ) x (Cost per combination)

Example 1: Quinella Part Wheel

You believe 8 will be first or second. Any of 2, 7 or 16 will join 8 as first or second.

Horse 8 is your first key.
Horses 2, 7, & 16 are your second key.
((1 horses x 3 horses) – (0 horses in both keys x 2)) x $2 cost = $6

Finishing OrderCost Each
8,2 or 2,8$2
8,7 or 7,8$2
8,16 or 16,8$2
Total Cost$6

Example 2: Quinella Full Wheel, multiple horse keys

8 horse race. You key horses 2,3 – All. “All” means all remaining horses in the field.

Horses 2 & 3 are your first key.
Horses 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 are your second key. The remaining horses in the field.
((2 horses x 6 horses) – (0 horses in both keys x 2)) x $2 cost = $24
